Moving Company Reviews: Mayflower Moving Company (Safeway Moving & Storage Lexington, KY)

Small house in CA

Safeway Moving & Storage’s Capabilities: Safeway Moving & Storage (“Safeway”) is the only Mayflower affiliated mover in Kentucky.

Safeway is a full service mover who is licensed to handle both intrastate and interstate moves. According to Safeway’s sales manager, Safeway has about 25, fifty-three foot trailers and assorted smaller trucks. Since they aren’t located in Louisville, my recommendation would be to consider them primarily for interstate moves and especially if you have a very large load that would fill a 53 foot trailer. Safeway offers a full range of services, which includes packing, unpacking, storage and self-load container options (similar to PODS).

Since Mayflower has affiliates spread across the United States, a variety of temporary storage options are available. In addition, Mayflower is one of just a few companies that will handle international moves.

Safeway Moving & Storage’s System: Based upon a discussion with Safeway’s sales manager, they can guarantee that only one customer’s goods are packed on a truck, if your household items will fill a 53 foot trailer and/or weigh around 25,000 pounds. So while competitors, using smaller vehicles (e.g., 26 footers), very often offer “direct” moves, with only your belongings on a truck, Mayflower operators, or any of the other well known operators using 53’ trucks, typically cannot. In addition, if your belongings cannot fill a truck, they will not give you a precise delivery date. What they will offer is a delivery window of between 3 and 12 days, depending on the distance involved and the size of your load. The further the move and the smaller your load the broader the delivery window. If the delivery doesn’t occur during the delivery window, Safeway will reimburse you $100 per day. Consequently, unless you can accept a wide delivery window or have a large load, don’t choose a mover who employs such large trucks. The smaller your load, the more “filler” loads will also be on the truck. All of their loaders and packers receive classroom and on-the-job training. Occasionally temporary workers may be hired, but they will only be used to carry boxes to and from the truck. Safeway is not a certified ProMover (see link below.)

Insurance options: Interstate moves allow $6 per pound per item. Additional, optional coverage is available up to a value of $250,000.

So What Does It Cost?  Safeway will send one of their estimators to your home to compile an inventory of the items you wish to move. The cost will be a function of the weight of the load, distance to your new home and the estimated loading/unloading time. Safeway accepts all major credit cards.

Cancellation/Reschedule Policy:

According to their sales manager, Alex, a deposit isn’t required; however, your credit card will be debited about 48 hours before your move.
